Menstruation is a normal biological process through which every woman goes through. During menstruation/periods the lining of the uterus sheds off following by a spike in estrogen hormones when the eggs released by the ovary are not fertilized.
Normally, a regular menstruation cycle is 21 to 35 days. But it is considered as irregular period if your periods do not occur in a regular cycle or after 35 days.
What Causes Irregular Periods?
Irregular periods are a common health issue in women. There are many factors that can cause this problem. Such as- excess weight loss/gain, anemia, menopause, thyroid problem, hormonal imbalance, liver diseases, tuberculosis, miscarriage, etc.
Also, some poor lifestyle habits like smoking, alcohol abuse, stress, anxiety, certain medications like birth control pills can cause this problem.
The chances of something wrong in your cycle is when:
- Periods occur in less than 21 days or after 35 days
- Missing periods 3 months in a row
- Menstrual flow is heavier or lighter than usual
- Bleeding occurs between periods
- Bleeding occurs after menopause
- Bleeding occurs after sexual intercourse
Home Remedies for Irregular Periods
Shatavari is a proven herb to treat irregular periods. Traditionally in Ayurveda, Shatavari is used to increase the corticoids & prolactin, which improves the quality and quantity of breast milk in lactating mothers. It also regulates the menstrual cycle by balancing hormones like estrogen.
Add 2-3 grams of Shatavari in lukewarm milk and consume it 1-2 times a day for regulating periods.
Green and unripe Papaya are considered as a useful remedy for regulating periods as it helps contract muscle fibers in uterus. Consumption of green papaya is not recommended during periods. But when you are not on periods, you can consume green papaya/juice regularly to treat irregular periods.
Ginger is a proven remedy for treating irregular menstruation. Boil 1 small finely chopped ginger for 3-5 minutes. Then add some honey to the mixture and drink this 2-3 times a day after food. Use this remedy for 1 month to regulate the periods.
Haldi is also helpful in regulating periods as well as balancing hormones. The antispasmodic & anti-inflammatory property of turmeric is useful for reducing menstrual pain and cramps.
Add ½ teaspoon of Haldi and, ½ teaspoon of jaggery to one glass of lukewarm milk. Consume this milk for 1-2 months to see results.
Not to be consumed during periods. It helps in regulating menstrual cycles naturally by balancing hormones. Drink one glass of fresh aloe vera juice by adding 1 teaspoon of honey to it. Drink this juice every morning before breakfast for 1 month to get the best results.

Soak 2 tablespoons of Cumin seeds in water overnight or for 6-8 hours. The next morning drink the water with the cumin. Repeat this process until your periods are regularized.
Yoga and Exercise
Stress and bad lifestyle habits are the main culprits behind hormone imbalance in the body that triggers irregular menstruation. And doing regular yoga and physical exercise can help in relieving stress and maintaining perfect hormonal balance in the body. Therefore practice 20-30 minutes of yoga or physical exercise every day to treat irregular periods problem.
