What causes tooth decay?
Tooth decay is commonly caused by bacteria. These bacteria are generally found inside our mouths. When these bacteria meet the sugar, starches from the foods and drinks we eat, they form acid. And these acids then attack the tooth enamel (the outer protective layering of teeth) which causes it to lose minerals.
These repeated attacks of acid cause the enamel to lose more minerals from the teeth forming a cavity. And over time these cavity leads to tooth decay and other teeth related problems.
The symptoms of cavities may vary, depending on the situation. When a cavity is at the 1st stage, you may not have any symptoms at all. As the decay gets larger, you may feel symptoms such as:

- Mild to sharp pain while eating or drinking something sweet, hot or cold
- Visible black holes or pits in your teeth
- Black, brown, or white staining on any surface of a tooth
- Pain when you bite down
