Chickenpox: Causes, Symptoms, and treatment

Chickenpox is a viral infection that is caused due to a virus called “Varicella-Zoster”. It is a contagious disease that can spread through the air or physical contact with an infected person. Children under 10 are more prone to get chickenpox rather than adults. However, it is not a dangerous disease and with proper chickenpox treatment, one can get rid of this easily.

Causes of Chickenpox

In Ayurveda chickenpox is referred to as “Laghu Masurika”. The term “Masurika” came from the word “Masoor”, which means red lentils in Hindi. It is used in reference to the red colored boils that appear on the body during chickenpox.
Poor eating habits like eating excessive oily, salty, bitter, and sour foods may cause chickenpox. Eating contaminated foods, green vegetables, and peas also causes pox.

Symptoms of Chickenpox

The common chickenpox symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Raised small pink or red boils on the body
  • Itching of the boils
  • Swelling
  • Body pain

Chickenpox treatment

Chickenpox usually lasts for 5-7 days. However, you can use these provided home remedies for chickenpox to ease its symptoms.

Harada
A fruit that is used in Triphala. It has anti-bacterial and anti-biotic properties which are helpful in chickenpox. It also improves digestion, boosts metabolism, and lowers inflammation in the body.
Mix 1-2 grams of Harada churan (powder) with ½ glass of bitter gourd leaves juice. Consume this solution 1-2 times a day to get relief from itching caused by chickenpox.

Turmeric (Haldi)
Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which are effective in conditions like chickenpox.
Take Haldi milk 1-2 times a day to reduce the swelling and itching.

Guduchi
Guduchi is an Ayurvedic herb useful in blood circulation and digestion. It improves the immune system in all types of doshas that are Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. This herb is also used in treatments like chickenpox, piles, fever, indigestion, etc.
Add 1-2 grams of Guduchi powder in 1 glass of lukewarm water. And consume this solution 1-2 times a day to ease the symptoms of chickenpox.

Neem
Neem is the old school remedy for most of the skin problems. It has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, disinfectant properties that make it extremely useful for chickenpox. It also detoxifies our blood.
Boil neem leaves in water for 5-10 minutes. Then use this water to give the patient a bath. It helps in easing the itching and irritation. Also, you can take neem juice to ease the other symptoms of chickenpox.

Sandalwood (Chandan)
Sandalwood (Chandan) is the boon for skin related problems. This brown-beige looking powder has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that help in chickenpox. It also acts as an astringent.
Apply sandalwood paste on the skin and on the breakouts to reduce the swelling and itching. You can also use this paste to remove the spots post chickenpox.

Honey
The anti-bacterial property of honey makes it a useful remedy for pox. You can apply honey directly on the blisters/boils to reduce the itching.

Herbal Tea
Herbal tea is also an easy way to recover quickly from chickenpox. To make herbal tea take crushed Tulsi leaves (Holy basil), chamomile, and calendula in water and boil it for 3-5 minutes. Then drink the tea 2-3 times a day for faster results.
